About me

Hi everyone, my name is Sophia Ross! I'm your stereotypical born and raised Southern California girl who moved out of state to experience seasons. Originally from Redondo Beach, California, I found a new home in the midwest at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. As a recent graduate from UW-Madison, I spent three years majoring in Journalism - specializing in both Reporting and Strategic Communications. I also received certificates in both Sports Communication and Digital Studies.

I initially entered the field of journalism and communications because my fifth grade teacher told me excessively that I asked too many questions. On a large whiteboard in the front of the classroom, she used to keep a running count of how many I had remaining for the day.
I used to believe that it was embarrassing, even obnoxious to search for answers and to be creatively driven. But this initial dismay at my own tendencies led me down the path of pursuing journalism/communications, an industry which is built upon posing inquiries and creating unique solutions. At 11 years old, I had a natural curiosity about the world, and it is a trait of mine that has remained at the forefront of who I am.

While sharing the narratives of teams, communities and organizations is something I take great pride in accomplishing , my work does not make up the entirety of who I am! I am an avid reader, easily lured away by a thorough plot line and compelling characters. Running acts as a form of self-care for me. I've ran two half marathons so far and hope to make my way up to a full marathon soon. Traveling is a huge part of my life as well - I'm on a mission to see all 50 states before 50. As of now, I'm at 14, but I've got quite a lot of years left to mark them all off!

Above all else, I'm a people person. I thrive working alongside others, whether it be in a work environment or a personal one. I believe it is a true privilege to be entrusted with someone's story. Every instance I happen to be, I aim to tell it with empathy and a persistence to detail.

As I move forward from UW-Madison, I hope to find a full-time role in journalism or the broader communications realm that allows me to continue telling meaningful stories.

Thank you for taking the time to look at my portfolio!
